SS-31

SS-31 is a four-residue peptide with an alternating aromatic-cationic structure that causes it to concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds the phospholipid cardiolipin selectively.

That interaction is the focus of most work involving it: electron transport chain efficiency, reactive oxygen species generation, and the structural stability of cristae. It is used in preclinical models of mitochondrial dysfunction, ischemia-reperfusion injury, age-related muscle loss, and neurodegeneration.
