Melanotan 1 is a synthetic analog of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone modified to resist enzymatic breakdown. Compared with its cyclic counterpart it is markedly more selective for the MC1R receptor subtype.
That selectivity makes it a standard comparator in melanocortin receptor pharmacology, melanogenesis assays, and photoprotection research using cell-based systems.
